ARTIST Katherine Mitchell

Katherine Mitchell is a British Artist who lives and works in London. As a teenager she received an art scholarship to attend Friend’s School Saffron Walden which allowed her to immerse herself in the study of drawing and painting. During her time here she was taught batik by Ella Berthoud which was seminal in creating her unique style.She later went on to study creative drawing at Central St Martins while studying theology and philosophy at University. These early experiences led to her combining her love of mysticism and place into expressive landscapes.

After a cancer diagnosis which left her having to shield Kate began to work more in earnest on painting as a way to heal.

Working in a range of media including resins, plaster and acrylic Kate’s paintings are highly intuitive images and are often inspired by music or poetry and aim to portray the emotional impact of landscape. Kate says of her work that ‘each image captures the impact of a landscape on the soul and in return how place opens up the mystery of psyche’.

Katherine Mitchell è un’artista britannica che vive e lavora a Londra. Da adolescente ha ricevuto una borsa di studio d’arte per frequentare la Friend’s School Saffron Walden che le ha permesso di immergersi nello studio del disegno e della pittura.
Durante la sua permanenza qui le è stato insegnato batik da Ella Berthoud, che è stato fondamentale nella creazione del suo stile unico. Successivamente ha studiato disegno creativo alla Central St Martins mentre studiava teologia e filosofia all’università. Queste prime esperienze l’hanno portata a combinare il suo amore per il misticismo e luoghi in paesaggi espressivi.

Dopo una diagnosi di cancro che l’ha costretta a doversi isolare durante la pandemia, Kate ha iniziato a lavorare più seriamente sulla pittura come un modo per guarire.

Lavorando con una vasta gamma di media, tra cui resine, gesso e acrilico, i dipinti di Kate sono immagini altamente intuitive e spesso sono ispirati dalla musica o dalla poesia e mirano a ritrarre l’impatto emotivo del paesaggio. Kate dice del suo lavoro che “ogni immagine cattura l’impatto di un paesaggio sull’anima e in cambio come il luogo apre il mistero della psiche”.
